AFRICAN & MIDDLE EAST HISTORY
Topics of African History include: Exploration of the development of African societies from the earliest times to the present; survey of social, economic and political developments in Africa with focus on slave trade, imperialism and colonialism, and nationalism and independence. Attention to different ideologies (nationalism, socialism, apartheid), rural/urban tensions and the changing role of women.
Topics of Middle East History include: Examination of major issues in the history of the Middle East; scholarly debate on the urban history of early-modern Middle East; examination of widespread social, economic and cultural changes during the 19th century that propelled society and aspects of its social/cultural life, in an entirely new direction. Analysis of those changes to understand exactly what modernity meant fo the region.
