SOCIOLOGY
As the study of human social relations, sociology cannot avoid being relevant to each and every one us. Sociology’s scope is infinite. Every aspect of your life, mine and the lives of every person past, present, future were, are, and will be shaped through participation in day-to-day social worlds. Sociology is both a topic and a highly critical social science which assumes, if anything, that: ‘things are not what they seem.’ In this class you will be given an opportunity to explore the origin, development, value, depth and relevance of sociology to understanding early 21st global societies. Specifically, you will learn how to think sociologically as we explore: the foundations of society; social divisions and social inequalities; social structures, practices, and institutions; and, finally, social change. There is such a richness and diversity of topics to be found in each of these areas including, but not limited to discussions of race, class, gender, sexualities, crime, media, religion, science, and power.
